Martin en Hazel Quarrier zijn protestantse missionarissen die naar de jungle van Zuid-Amerika worden gestuurd om er de indianen te bekeren. Bij hun aankomst leren ze het koppel Leslie en Andy Huben kennen, die er aan het hoofd van de Amerikaanse evangelische gemeenschap staan. Hazel is erg bang voor de indianen, terwijl Martin mateloos door hen gefascineerd raakt. Al snel worden ze vergezeld door de Amerikaanse piloot, Lewis Moon, en zijn assistent Wolf. De Braziliaanse overheid heeft hen gestuurd om het regenwoud te vernietigen en de indianen van hun land te verdrijven. Maar Lewis voelt zich aangetrokken tot de jonge Andy.
